Portland’s Best Neighborhoods: Dunthorpe

Best known for its elegant properties and central location, Dunthorpe is a close-knit, residential community located 10 minutes south of downtown Portland, Oregon near Lewis & Clark College and the city of Lake Oswego.

The community of Dunthorpe was born in January 1916, when William M. Ladd’s company, purchased 215 acres from the Oregon Iron & Steel Company for $1. Under the guidance of the Ladd Estate Company drafted very specific provisions for the Dunthorpe development – including that, only residential buildings be allowed, the sole exception, being for outbuildings housing domestic animals.

This forethought, to the intentional design of this distinctive community, is what has allowed Dunthorpe to remain a haven and preserved its integrity for generations to come. The homes in Dunthorpe are as uniquely designed as the history and lives of its residents. Many of these incomparable estates appear on the National Historical Registry, designed by acclaimed architects and design firms.

The award-winning schools provide a truly exceptional education (highly rated by the state of Oregon’s Department of Education).  As would be expected, with academically rigorous programs and small class sizes, test scores for Dunthorpe’s Riverdale Schools are high and college attendance rates are among the highest in the state.

In addition, the secluded privacy offered by Dunthorpe’s idyllic natural setting, well within reach of the Metropolitan area, offers you the best of both worlds. Boasting beautiful waterfront properties and plenty of lush green space, homes here are situated between Tryon Creek State Park and the Willamette River, providing homeowners with a variety of breathtaking natural landscapes, including 645 forested acres of hiking trails, paved bicycle paths, and horse trails at Tryon Creek State Park.
