Portland’s Best Neighborhoods: Lake Oswego

Founded in 1847, this premier suburb ten miles south of Portland is the cream of the crop for affluent families who value a top-tier education and a wholesome, engaged community.

Situated around the serene, 400+ acre Oswego Lake, this sought-after bastion of luxury and beauty is small enough (population 37,000) to still have a small-town feel, but large enough to boast its own downtown shopping area with coffee shops, posh eateries, a brewery, and even its own independent theater company.

Rounding out the downtown area is the majestic lakeside Millennium Plaza Park. This ideal gathering place in the heart of Lake Oswego contains a fountain, sculptures, pergola, fireplace, and reflecting pond. Sip a coffee on one of its benches and just enjoy the breeze coming off Lakewood Bay, or take part in one of the paved plaza’s many activities such as farmer’s markets, movies in the park, summer music concerts, the 4th of July Celebration, or the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony.

Home to many local and international celebrities, Lake Oswego is made up of mostly unique single-family homes on large lots (the hilltop dwellings and waterfront luxury estates being the best of the best), with some mixed-use apartments, condominiums and starter homes filling out the mix.

Beautiful any time of the year, with city-maintained gardens and floral displays in the spring and summer and wreaths, banners, and light displays ushering in the winter months, Lake Oswego offers over 600 acres of community parks and open spaces including the private Oswego Lake Country Club and the neighboring Lake Oswego Hunt Club. There’s always something to do in Lake Oswego, no matter what time of year.
